Uterine Fibroid

The most common etiology for a focus of intense uptake in or abutting the uterine walls is a benign uterine fibroid (often difficult to visualize on the co-registered non-contrast CT images). 

Premenopausal: 

Unless there is specific reason to have a high clinical suspicion for a uterine malignancy, no further evaluation is recommended (Report: “…typically represents a normal uterine fibroid in a premenopausal woman…”).

Postmenopausal: 

In a postmenopausal woman, a focus of intense uptake associated with the uterine wall still likely represents a benign fibroid. As this population is at greater risk for malignancy, however, it is reasonable to recommended an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. We typically report,  “While this likely represent a benign uterine fibroid, ultrasound correlation may be warranted for this postmenopausal woman.”
