Thrombosis

As intravenous contrast is only rarely administered during a PET/CT scan, it is fairly uncommon to identify thrombus on the CT portion of the exam.

As acute and chronic thrombi are often FDG-avid (acute thrombus is generally more avid than chronic thrombus), thrombus is occasionally identified on the PET portion of the exam.

It is especially important to keep this diagnosis in mind when metabolic activity conforms to the morphology of a vessel.

FDG-avid thrombosis may be seen with:

  • Acute or chronic thrombosis
  • Arterial or venous thrombosis
  • Tumor thrombus or bland thrombus
