Arthritis

Both degenerative and inflammatory arthropathies commonly cause intense FDG uptake.

The uptake can lie within the affected bone, within an osteophyte, within a subchondral cyst or may affect the joint space itself.

While any joint can be affected, arthritic uptake most commonly affects the:

  • Acromioclavicular joints
  • Sternoclavicular joints
  • Glenohumeral joints
  • Coxofemoral (hip) joints
  • 1st MCP & 1st MTP joints

In the degenerative spine, intense uptake can localize to:

  • Vertebral endplate
  • Osteophtye
  • Hypertrophied facet joint
  • Subchondral cyst

Unless accompanied by a suspicious lesion on the co-registered CT images, joint uptake is presumed to reflect an arthropathy and is rarely reported.
